L’autisme expliqué aux non-autistes: Giving Illustrations a Voice and Movement

In August and September 2026, I worked with Groupe Livre Québecor on a promotional video for L’autisme expliqué aux non-autistes. Published by Trécarré on September 30, the updated illustrated edition brings together Brigitte Harrisson, Kim Thúy and Lise St-Charles. My role was to give video form to a narration script prepared by the team, using illustrations from the book.
This time, my starting material had already been drawn. I didn’t have to create the illustrations, but find a way to bring them to life on screen. Movement had to follow what they were telling us, allow time to look at them and support the transition from one idea to another. It’s another way of working with images: every movement and every duration contributes to understanding.
I handled the editing and animation effects for the video. Kim Thúy’s voice, incorporated into the edit in September, connected the images with the story. With a text and visuals already developed, my work was to bring them together, give the piece a rhythm and preserve space for its message.
I worked in particular with Frédérique Grenouillat and Groupe Livre Québecor’s preparation team. What stays with me is the pleasure of working with beautiful visual material and a shared intention: introducing a book that invites greater understanding. I really enjoyed the early animation stages, and that search for the right approach informed the rest of the work.
In my work as an independent filmmaker, book projects lead me to tell stories differently. Editing isn’t only about creating energy; it can also give words room to breathe and make an idea more accessible. This collaboration reminds me how much attention a short format can require when it carries a human subject.
Above all, I remember the connection between disciplines: writing, illustration, voice and video respond to one another to open a door to the book. A rewarding creative encounter where my contribution in postproduction finds its full meaning.
