In summer 2024, I helped create the video announcing Phil Roy as host of the Gala Québec Cinéma. Produced with Sphère Média, the video brought together several facets of my work: directing, cinematography and editing. It was a rewarding opportunity to put my work in service of a celebration of Québec cinema.

Phil Roy’s announcement was made public on August 28, 2024, ahead of the Gala’s twenty-sixth edition, broadcast on Noovo on December 8. My contribution was the host announcement video. This short format called for establishing a situation, a personality and a tone in just a few moments.

The script included a playful use of Phil’s image inside a television. That detail created an interesting staging challenge: making the performer, the frame and the screen work together. Before filming, I took time to break down the shots and prepare their sequence so the idea could take shape within the time available with Phil.

Behind the camera, then in the edit, I sought to maintain continuity between intention and result. In a video where humour matters, the precision of a glance, a shot’s duration or the timing of a cut can change how a scene is received. That attention to rhythm is one of the things I love most about moving from filming to postproduction.

I also remember a very enjoyable collaboration with the Sphère Média team, including Mathilde Roy Blackburn in production management. I enjoyed working with them and contributing to the announcement. Behind every short video are people who make ideas possible.

In my independent filmmaking career, this project represents a way to connect my skills: preparing a scene, giving it visual form and continuing to shape it through editing. Contributing, in my own way, to the visibility of Québec cinema made the encounter especially meaningful.
