In 2025, my collaboration with Cabaret L’Enfer led me to work in directing, cinematography and postproduction on content for social media. Chef Massimo Piedimonte’s Montréal restaurant offered a world where gestures, materials and the culinary team’s presence could become the heart of the story.

Preparation began with a very concrete experience: an evening at the restaurant, followed by reflection on how to translate its atmosphere into images. I developed an approach around six themes, with a different directing intention for each. The idea was to find several entry points into one place rather than repeat a single formula.

What interested me was the possibility of telling the story of cooking through the people who do it and what happens around them. A hand at work, a conversation within the team, a detail of preparation: cinema can give space to elements we sometimes move past too quickly. They let us feel expertise and personality without explaining everything.

The approach favoured visual suggestion and natural exchanges. I wanted to avoid an overly prominent narration taking over the place. In directing and behind the camera, that meant preparing possibilities while leaving room for what the restaurant and its team could bring.

Editing extended that search for atmosphere. The rhythm of the images and the music shape how we discover a culinary world: they can bring out movement, texture or collective energy. My contribution followed the project from its initial intention to its video form.

This collaboration renewed my interest in the connections between creative disciplines. Cooking and cinema work with different materials, but both require attention, choices and a personal way of composing. These are the encounters that feed my perspective as an independent filmmaker.

Cabaret L’Enfer holds a special place in my memories of Montréal projects: a distinctive venue, a culinary team and a chance to tell a different story about what is created every day.
